History

The first documented news about La Nou date from 1011 in the donation papers of the castle of Albinyana and, again, in 1023, in the sale document of the castle of Castellví de la Marca from Ramon de Berenguer the 1st to Guillem Amat.

From the 12th century, La Nou has been linked, religiously as well as politically, to Altafulla.

In the 14th century, the Requesens family obtained the lordship over La Nou and kept it until 1472, when Lluís de Requesens i de Cardona sold it, together with Altafulla, to the Castellet family. The Castellet's ruled the place for four generations and when the last heir died, La Nou and Altafulla were donated to his nephew Miquel Riambau de Corbera-Santcliment i de Castellet. One of his descendants sold the lordship of La Nou to Francesc de Montserrat i Vives, who was also lord of Montbrió, Ribelles, El Morell, Tamarit and Botarell. After his death, his relatives, the Marquis of Tamarit, kept this possessions until the 19th century.

Ramon de Morenes i Garcia Alesson (La Nou 1866-Madrid 1934) was eighth Count of El Asalto, Marquis of Grigny, Count of La Peña del Moro, Viscount of Alesson and fifth Baron of Las Cuatro Torres. He was the headmaster of the agronomy school in Madrid , Congress Secretary and member of the History Academy.

Remarkable places

Castell del Baró de les Quatre Torres

Although the former castle was built in the 12th century the current building dates from the 18th century. The castle and its gardens were donated to the municipality by Lluís de Morenés i Carbajal Marquis of Nules in 1982. Three years later the place was declared good of cultural interest in the category of historical monuments. Nowadays, the castle is being repaired.

Parish Church

The parish church worships Santa Maria Magdalena our town's Patron Saint. The building dates from the 18th century.

Monument dedicated to La Verge de les Neus

In 1816, the town suffered summer hailstone storms that damaged the grape vintage for four consecutive years. For that reason the villagers decided to make a vow to the Mother of God of Les Neus. For the first centenary there was built a Modernista monument dedicated to the Virgin in the Centenary Square that was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. In 1966, the monument was built again in the same place together with a sculpture by Eustaqui Vallès. Also the chapel in the castle is dedicated to this Virgin, in the chapel there was a polychrome carving that for safety reasons was moved to the parish church.

Old washing place

The town's old washing places are located in a hollow where the Nou River flows. It is a shady place covered with mulberry trees. The village wants to recover this place and transform it into a leisure area.

Gardens of the castle of El Cercat

The gardens are located right in the middle of town within the castle's enclosure and take up one hectare. The place counts with a parking lot, a fountain, a playground and a dance floor. Also the Casal Municipal ( town's social organisation) is located there.

Bay Window of La Pleta

This place near the castle and its chapel has a great view of the Vespella mountains, this is why there is a project to build a bay window and a sculpture.
